RESEARCH PAPER

The Third Pillar of
Investment Management

How AI Will Transform the Way We Invest

By Tal Schwartz, Ph.D., Founder and CEO, AI Funds | August 2026

ABSTRACT

Why This Matters
for Advisors

Artificial intelligence has surpassed the best human players at chess and at every other strategic game it has entered. Investing is a harder game: much of the relevant information is hidden, outcomes are shaped by chance, and the rules change over time. It is nonetheless built on mathematics and statistics, the domains in which AI is advancing fastest. This paper sets out a framework for a third pillar of investment management now emerging alongside active and passive approaches: AI-Managed investing, in which an AI Investment Model, or AIM, serves as the investment strategist and delivers fully constructed portfolios rather than recommendations for a human to act upon. The paper details what becomes possible: systematic execution without the emotional biases that affect human judgment, and portfolios designed to manage risk asymmetrically, seeking to limit downside exposure while preserving upside participation.

For financial advisors, three consequences follow: due diligence changes, because AI-Managed strategies require a different set of questions; time is designed to shift from portfolio construction toward planning, client relationships, and business development; and the client conversation changes, because the category is new and clients will bring questions. The paper examines the limitations of the approach in full. In the author’s view, they call for discipline rather than doubt: the open question is not whether the category takes hold but how quickly.
